You deliver the work — they ghost the invoice
Clients love the photos, the video, the design — then go quiet when the final payment is due. Without file-hold terms, you have no leverage.
Unlimited revision requests kill your margin
One more change becomes five more changes. Without a revision cap in writing, the client controls your time.
Rush jobs get done without a rush fee
Without a written rush fee policy, urgent clients benefit at your expense.
Why creative professionals get paid less than they've earned
Creative work is unique: you invest significant time and talent before you see a single dollar. If the deposit, revision terms, and file-release conditions aren't set in writing before you start, every project carries the risk of ending in a dispute — or worse, an unpaid final invoice. This checklist gives creative professionals the exact steps to protect their income: collect 50% upfront, cap revisions, invoice at milestones, and only release final files once the last payment clears. Sole's invoicing lets you send milestone invoices instantly, and Worldpay gives your clients the fastest way to pay — card, Apple Pay, Google Pay — so there's no excuse for a delayed transfer.

ATO & Compliance Note
Important
All income from creative work — including project fees, licensing royalties, and commercial usage rights — is assessable income that must be declared to the ATO. Track every invoice in Sole to reconcile your ATO obligations, including GST if your annual turnover exceeds $75,000. Your signed creative agreements and milestone invoices also serve as your audit trail.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions
Is a 50% deposit really necessary for every creative project?
For any project that takes more than a day of your time, a deposit is non-negotiable. It covers your materials, pre-production time, and committed availability. Without it, a cancelled project leaves you with zero income for that period and no legal obligation for the client to compensate you.
When should I release the final files to a client?
Only after the final invoice is paid in full. State this explicitly in your creative agreement from the start. Releasing files before payment puts you in an extremely weak negotiating position if the client disputes the final bill or goes silent.
How do I handle a client who keeps requesting more revisions?
Cap revision rounds in your initial quote (e.g. 2 rounds included — additional rounds charged at your hourly rate). When a client requests a third or fourth round, respond with an invoice before proceeding. Sole lets you add line items to existing invoices quickly when extra revision rounds are approved.
