Frequently asked questions
Common questions
How do I know if my rates are competitive in my area?
Use the AI benchmark prompt in Section 7 of the DOCX — paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini (free versions work perfectly). Input your trade type and suburb. The AI will return typical call-out fees, hourly rates, and fixed-price job ranges for your area based on current market data. You can also check local Facebook trade groups, ServiceSeeking, or Hipages for publicly listed rates.
Should I always charge a call-out fee?
For most trade work, yes. A call-out fee does several things: it qualifies serious clients, compensates you for travel and initial diagnosis time, and sets a professional expectation from the start. The exception might be repeat clients on a retainer arrangement, or multi-job visits where you are already onsite. Most experienced tradies treat the call-out fee as non-negotiable.
How should I handle materials mark-up?
The standard approach is to charge materials at cost plus a 15–30% mark-up. This mark-up covers your time sourcing and transporting materials, any warranty liability, and the risk of price fluctuations. Always list materials as a separate line item in your Sole quote so the client can see exactly what they are paying for — transparency reduces disputes.
